Shockwave Therapy
At Beebout Veterinary Medical Center, we’re always looking for ways to help your pet heal faster, feel better, and get back to the activities they love — without unnecessary medication or surgery. Shockwave therapy is one of the most effective non-invasive treatments available in veterinary medicine today, and we’re proud to offer it to patients at our Kearney location.
What Is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy — sometimes called extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) — uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate the body’s own healing response at a cellular level. A handheld device delivers focused acoustic pulses into the targeted tissue, where they trigger the release of growth factors, increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, and encourage the formation of healthy new tissue and bone.
It’s not the same thing as ultrasound or laser therapy. Shockwave uses a different kind of energy and reaches deeper, denser tissues — making it especially valuable for tendon, ligament, joint, and bone conditions that don’t always respond well to other treatments.
We use the PulseVet electrohydraulic system — a technology backed by more than two decades of clinical research and considered the gold standard in veterinary shockwave care.
Conditions We Treat with Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy can support healing for a wide range of orthopedic, soft-tissue, and chronic pain conditions. Common reasons we recommend it include:
Joint & Bone Conditions
- Osteoarthritis and degenerative joint disease
- Hip and elbow dysplasia
- Stress fractures and delayed-healing fractures
- Chronic joint inflammation
Soft-Tissue Injuries
- Tendon and ligament injuries
- Muscle strains and tears
- Lick granulomas and slow-healing wounds
Back, Neck & Nerve Pain
- Chronic back and neck pain
- Lumbosacral pain
- Post-surgical recovery support
Not sure if shockwave is right for your pet’s condition? Our team will walk you through the options during a consultation and recommend the approach that fits your pet best.
Why Pet Owners Choose Shockwave Therapy
For the right patients, shockwave therapy offers a number of advantages over more invasive options:
- Non-invasive — No incisions, no implants, no recovery from surgery.
- Drug-free — A useful option for pets with sensitivities to pain medications or anti-inflammatories.
- Quick sessions — Most treatments take less than five minutes per area.
- Long-lasting results — Many pets see meaningful improvement after just 1–3 sessions.
- Gentle on the body — No burns, no protective equipment required, and most pets tolerate the procedure well.
- Backed by research — More than 20 years of clinical study in human and veterinary medicine.
What to Expect
We know that any new treatment can feel unfamiliar — especially when it’s for a member of your family. Here’s what a typical shockwave appointment looks like at Beebout.
- Consultation & exam. One of our veterinarians will examine your pet, review their history, and confirm shockwave is a good fit for the condition.
- Preparation. We may clip a small area of fur over the treatment site so the device can make good contact with the skin. A gentle gel is applied, similar to ultrasound.
- The treatment itself. A handheld probe delivers focused pulses to the affected area. Each session typically takes about 5 minutes per region treated. Most pets rest comfortably during the procedure; for anxious or sensitive patients, mild sedation may be recommended for comfort.
- Going home. Your pet can usually go home the same day. We’ll send you off with simple aftercare instructions.
- Follow-up sessions. Depending on the condition, your veterinarian may recommend a series of 1–3 treatments spaced 2–3 weeks apart. Some pets need only one session; others benefit from a short series.
A note on rest: Even when your pet seems to feel better right away, the deeper healing response continues for weeks after each session. Following your veterinarian’s activity restrictions is essential to getting the best long-term result.
Is Shockwave Therapy Right for Your Pet?
Shockwave isn’t the right answer for every condition, and we’ll always be straightforward with you about whether we think it will help. It tends to be most effective for chronic orthopedic problems, slow-healing injuries, and pets who haven’t responded as well as we’d hoped to other treatments — including older dogs whose mobility has been declining and active horses recovering from soft-tissue injuries.
If you’ve been managing a pet with arthritis, lameness, or a lingering injury, a consultation is the best place to start. Our team will examine your pet, talk through the options with you, and recommend the path forward that gives your companion the best chance at comfort and mobility.
